Barnaby's Little Lie

Barnaby loved his shiny, yellow toy car. It was his favorite! One sunny afternoon, Barnaby was hurrying his car across the living room rug, making loud “vroom vroom” noises. Suddenly, CRASH! Barnaby’s car bumped into his mom’s favorite vase, and it tumbled off the table, breaking into many colorful pieces.

Barnaby’s heart went thump-thump-thump. He knew his mom would be sad. He saw her coming into the room.

“Barnaby, what happened?” she asked, her voice gentle.

Barnaby looked at the broken vase and then at his feet. “The cat did it,” he whispered.

His mom looked surprised. “The cat? But the cat is sleeping in the other room.”

Barnaby felt his cheeks get warm. He knew it wasn’t true. He looked at his mom’s kind eyes. He felt a little tear start to fall down his cheek.

“I did it,” he said, his voice very small. “My car crashed into the vase.”

His mom knelt down and gave him a warm hug. “Thank you for telling me the truth, Barnaby,” she said. “It’s okay to make mistakes. We all do. But it’s important to tell the truth, even when it’s hard. Telling the truth makes our hearts feel clean and happy.”

Barnaby nodded. He felt a little sad about the broken vase, but he also felt good inside because he had told the truth.

“We can clean it up together,” his mom said.

Together, they carefully picked up the pieces of the vase and put them in the trash. Barnaby felt happy helping his mom, and he knew that telling the truth was always the best thing to do. His mom smiled. “God loves it when we tell the truth, Barnaby. Telling the truth makes our hearts feel clean and happy, and it makes God happy too.”
